The Faculty

The Principal Faculty are present throughout the field course and provide primary instruction of all field exercises. Associated Faculty are present during selected exercises and field trips.

Principal Faculty

Tobias Fischer. Assistant Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of New Mexico. Ph.D., Arizona State University, 1999. Research in volcanology with emphasis on active volcanism, geochemistry of fluids from active volcanoes and hydrothermal systems, effects of volatiles on climate. Current research areas are volcanoes in Central and South America, Kamchatka and Indonesia.

Fraser Goff. Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ph.D., University of California, Santa Cruz, 1977. Research on the geology and geochemistry of active geothermal systems and volcanoes, most recently in Mexico, Colombia, Italy and the Galapagos Islands; a principal investigator for scientific drilling in the Valles Caldera.

Gary A. Smith. Associate Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of New Mexico. Ph.D., Oregon State University, 1986. Research in volcaniclastic sedimentology and volcanic stratigraphy; dynamics of pyroclastic flows; growth and internal structure of composite volcanoes.

Grant Heiken. Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara, 1972. Research on pyroclastic deposits and rocks, geothermal exploration, and planetary volcanism; coauthor of "Volcanic Ash", "Volcanology and Geothermal Energy", and "Volcanoes: Crucibles of Change". Current President of the International Association on Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.

Ken Wohletz. Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ph.D., Arizona State University, 1978. Research on numerical simulation of volcanic processes; ; coauthor of "Volcanic Ash", "Volcanology and Geothermal Energy".

W. Scott Baldridge. Los Alamos National Laboratory. Ph.D., California Institute of Technology, 1978. Research on the relationship of volcanism to rift tectonics, magma genesis in rifts, seismic tomography of the Jemez Mountains region.
