Scholarships Offered by the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
The scholarship application deadline for Spring 2008 awards is Wednesday,
March 26th by no later than 4:00 PM. Below are links to Microsoft Word
Document Templates that will allow you to fill out and print application forms
to submit. Applicants will also need to submit an unofficial transcript and
an informal statment concerning your current funding sources and a brief statement
of your accomplishments at UNM. These items are explained more extensively on
the application form.
For ease in completing and printing the form, your should click on the links
below to download the appropriate document template to your computer and fill
it out. (Documents will download into a new browser window and load directly
into Microsoft Word; close that window when done to return to this page).
Any of the Windows computers in the department computer lab (Northrop 209)
may be used to do this. If you have trouble downloading or using the form, see
Cindy in the main office who can give you a paper copy of the form to complete.
Completed printed forms need to be turned in to Cindy in the main office
by no later than 4:00 PM on March 26th, 2007.
On this page are listed most of the scholarships which may be awarded to graduate
and/or undergraduate students by the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
The Caswell Silver Fellowship is awarded by the Caswell
Silver Foundation and is not detailed on this page. Most of the scholarships
awarded by the department are the result of generous contributions from alumni
and friends of the department.

- Begins in Academic Year 2003-2004
- Graduate Student with interests in geohydrology, surface hydrology and related
fields (e.g., sedimentology, geomorphology, and/or environmental geochemisty)
- 9 month stipend for the Academic Year
Douglas Brookins Memorial Scholarship
General Thomas D. Campbell Memorial
- Junior or senior
- Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth and Planetary Science
- Two prior semesters of attendance at UNM
- GPA of 2.7 to 3.3 (inclusive) in geology, natural sciences and mathematics, and an overall GPA of at least 2.2
- Prime but not essentia1 consideration is financial need
Chair’s Discretionary Fund
- Utilized to provide support for student professional activities
Collections Development Fund
- To support the collection of rocks, minerals and fossils
- Utilized to acquire specimens that enhance the reference and teaching collections and to purchase outstanding specimens for the department’s museum
Energy Exploration, Education Fund
- To enhance the education of geology students in petroleum geology, basin studies and related fields

- Graduate student pursuing a Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM
- Specialization in igneous petrology and volcanology

- Graduate student demonstrating a strong interest in natural resource development and/or research

Richard P. Vann Memorial Scholarship
- Graduate students working on the paleontology of New Mexico or related subdiscipline
