This page contains announcements related to changes and upgrades in the department's computer network. These items have been separated from the regular Department News Page that contains items of more general interest. These items are all posted by the Network Administrator, and will be removed when they are no longer timely or are incorporated into other network related documents.
In order to facilitate the integration of our new Terrabyte of Network attached storage and allow us to upgrade our servers to a more modern version of Windows Server, our Department domain name has been changed to EPSCI. This change was completed at Noon on March 15th, and all domain controllers and member servers are using the EPSCI domain. The website (epswww.unm.edu) and ftp site (eps.unm.edu) are now back on line, along with the L: and M: drives and network printers. Before the afternoon is over, I plan to configure the three presentation computers in 115, 105 and 340, the two Laptops used for presentations, all the workstations in Rm 209 and the computers in the XRD lab.
Individuals will have to rejoin their computers to the domain, and a special time-limited account has been set up for this purpose. Instructions for how to do this will be found on our Intranet Page. Click here to load it in a new window.
The migration had a couple of glitches causing a bit of trepidation, but much less trauma than I expected. The drive permissions were apparently 100% migrated from the old domain to the new, including permissions for printers and files and folders. After your workstation(s) have been joined to the new domain, it will be important that users alert me to any issues that arise so that they may be promptly addressed. PLEASE don't be shy about it.
Later this (Saturday) afternoon I will send out an Email with instructions about how you can use it to rejoin your computer systems to the new EPSCI domain. This will basically duplicate the information on the Intranet Page.
I will be here for the balance of the week and the beginning of the week after Spring Break.

Our current seat-licensed software has been upgraded for the 2007-2008 season. This software only functions on computers that are in continuous contact with the license manager for the software and includes the following:

Northrop Hall has its own subnet and hardware firewall. This has been done to enhance network security and reduce intrusions and unnecessary traffic on our network within the building. For information about the firewall, including how regular network users may be affected, please read the following document on our Department’s web site:
http://epswww.unm.edu/news/firewall.pdf
Some users may have specialized needs that require firewall ports be opened to their desktop or research lab systems. Some of the common applications requiring access from systems outside of Northrop Hall may include an FTP or Web server, Windows Remote Desktop access, SSH access, or other special bi-directional server communications for specialized applications. These applications require that the host systems have a fixed IP address and that the required ports be opened on the firewall. All firewall changes must be coordinated through Jim Connolly -- see me if you have needs in this area. Most changes may be implemented within a couple of days.

The library of graphics which are used on this web site (and may be downloaded and used on your web pages) has been updated. The link is http://epswww.unm.edu/graphics. Two significant additions are high-resolution images of the department's Geology logo (seen in small version at the upper right hand corner of this page) in both JPEG format (white background) and GIF format (with transparent background).
