METEORITE MUSEUM RENOVATION

The Meteorite Museum, in UNM’s Northrop Hall, was first opened in 1974. Its infrastructure, cases, lighting and exhibits are currently in need of extensive renovation. Using a grant from NASA’s Education and Public Outreach Program, we have recently designed a new exhibit that we plan to install in the Museum once sufficient funds are raised. Materials designed for this exhibit are available as our Virtual Tour.

The Meteorite Museum and the Meteorite Collection are used extensively in educational programs of the Institute of Meteoritics and Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM. The Museum is free and welcomes several thousand visitors each year, many of whom are K-12 students. The Museum and collection are also used extensively in undergraduate and graduate student education in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Astronomy. Scientists at UNM and worldwide study our meteorites in research projects that explore the origin and geological evolution of the Solar System.

We welcome your financial contributions to support our outreach programs. If you are interested in contributing to the Renovation Project, please contact the Institute of Meteoritics.

Plans for the new exhibit were produced by Dr. Rhian Jones and Dr. Barbara Cohen at UNM, in collaboration with design consultants Anton Friis and Caren Cook of Albuquerque.
