Graduate Admissions and Degree Requirements

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UNM prides itself in its ability to give students a solid foundation in both field-and laboratory-based geosciences. Our emphasis is on training well-rounded students in the laboratory, classroom, and field. Financial support is available in the form of Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, and Fellowships. All awards are made on a competitive basis. Our web site (http://epswww.unm.edu) contains a lot of information about our department including faculty, research programs, ongoing research, and laboratory facilities.

This page contains information about how to apply to our programs. Please note that admission procedures have recently changed so that a significant portion of the application must be completed online directly with the Office of Graduate studies. As an applicant, it is your responsibility to make sure your file is complete. Incomplete files will not be reviewed. In the procedure below we color coded the material that needs to go to the Office of Admissions (in Red) and the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences (in Blue). Applicants might find it useful to print this page and use it as a checklist.

Applications for our graduate program can be completed on-line at the following website address http://www.unm.edu/grad. Click on "Admissions" and select either “Domestic or permanent resident students” or “International students”. Carefully read criteria and complete application form. These applications go directly to the Office of Admissions and are forwarded by them to the Department. Our application deadlines are different from the University-wide deadline. In order to be considered for admission for Fall Semester with financial aid, your complete application must be received by January 31. Complete applications for admission without financial aid will be accepted until April 1. The deadline for application materials for Spring admission is November 1. Admission to our graduate program is competitive and most offers are made in mid to late February from the applications received prior to January 31.
