Hello and welcome to the homepage of:

UNM’s Society of Earth Scientists

NEWS and OUTLOOK for 07-08 school year:

This semester the UNM Geology club has re-titled itself the UNM Society of Earth Scientists. Geologists and Environmental Science undergrads have come together under this name to form a single group, representing the interests and pursuits of the entire Earth and Planetary Sciences department.

The SES is open to students of all majors who may have an interest in the Earth Sciences, and issues pertaining to human interaction with the planet Earth in general. We aim to enhance learning in the department by organizing extra-curricular activities with hands-on experience of New Mexico’s geology, hydrology, climate, and other “neat” things. With the assistance of department professors and local people knowledgeable and working in related fields around the city and state, the SES also intends to facilitate a closer community and working relationship between students, professors, and local professionals.

ACTIVITIES

As in the past we will be putting together a number of Green Chile Seminars. The first one this year will likely happening near the end of the October, (keep an eye out for flyers in the hall or a note in your email). Bring your eyes, ears, and your appetite, the club has been known to do it up in the kitchen.

Also coming up is a camping trip to the Jemez mountains. We will have professor(s) along to divulge knowledge on local topics as well as some good time on the trail. A big part of the college experience is meeting good people. Our field outings provide knowledge and introduce intrigue about the rocks, waters, and weeds in a more relaxed atmosphere where people can get to know each other and have a good time. Most of us, after all, are in this department to experience the outdoors that we all love.

SERVICES

The SES will soon begin providing services within the department that make accessible current scholarship/internship opportunities and also work opportunities. We will be scripting another webpage where this type of information can be accessed and will be updated with new postings and events.

We are also looking to construct a homework help network of EPS classes. New to the department or just needing help with a class you have, someone within our group should be able to help out.

MEETINGS

As of the end of September, it was decided that we will be holding two meetings per week: one at 1 PM and another at 4PM on Fridays. Determining a time for all to attend is a next to an impossible task, so we are going to try this out and see how it works.

Stop by a meeting when you have some time or if you just want to stay up with what is going on with SES. Email us at mark@gaddyfirm.com and be added to the mailing list! If you can’t make the meeting times, join the e-mail list. You never know how many people will be willing to go on a Saturday hike for the fun of it.
