Help and Hints for Framed Pages
The new Earth & Planetary Sciences web pages make use of frames. This lets
you navigate our site (and other linked web pages) while keeping our menus available
in the left frame.
The pages generally look best on browsers run in full-screen mode with 600
x 800 (or better) resolution. Below are some hopefully helpful hints to make
the use of our pages a pleasant experience.
- Alternative to Framed Pages: If you are using a standard VGA (640
x 480) monitor, or you just hate frames (damn things!), just click on the
"No Frames" graphic at the top of the page to the right of our logo.
This will open a text-based index to our site in a new window and you can
ignore the framed page under it. If you are in this group, just click here
and you will get a new window with our no-frames text index.
- Opening Pages in an Unframed Window: Virtually all web browsers will
let you open a linked page in a new Window. This is most useful if you want
an unframed page for printing or if the "target" page needs a larger
screen area to be useful. To do this hold your mouse cursor over the link
to the page (i.e., not within the page), click the right
mouse button (Mac users, hold down your mouse button) and select the option
to "Open (Frame) in New Window". This will open the linked page
in a new window completely independent of the framed pages. All web browsers
allow you to do this, and you may have many different pages open in different
windows. Netscape (but not Internet Explorer) allows you to open a frame which
you are currently viewing in a new window.
- How to get back to our framed pages. When you open our framed page, the URL in the Address line of your web browser
will read http://epswww.unm.edu. If you
link to any of our other directly by entering the URL in the Address line
of your web browser (i.e., http://epswww.unm.edu/escilink.htm), that page
will load in an unframed environment, and the links will not open in the framed
environment. To get to the framed home page, just edit the address line back
to the http://epswww.unm.edu, and you will get the framed home page. (Note:
In this paragraph, clicking on the link to our basic address will open our
framed page and replace this page with it.)
