BrF₅ delivery system. The reagent is frozen from the tank to the Kel-F trap on the right, which is adjacent to the laser chamber. It is then partially distilled back to the Kel-F trap on the left, farther from the chamber. The reagent that is left behind is pure BrF₅. The right-hand Kel-F tube is filled with the nearly colorless BrF₅ reagent, while that on the left is contaminated with other BrF_x compounds. 100 millitorr of reagent are admitted into the sample chamber for an analysis. Each aliquot of reagent is used only one time. After reaction, the excess BrF_x compounds are frozen into the waste trap (rear, stainless steel bottle). For a schematic of the waste trap, click here .
