BrF5 delivery system. The reagent is frozen from the tank to the Kel-F trap on the right, which is adjacent to the laser chamber. It is then partially distilled back to the Kel-F trap on the left, farther from the chamber. The reagent that is left behind is pure BrF5. The right-hand Kel-F tube is filled with the nearly colorless BrF5 reagent, while that on the left is contaminated with other BrFx compounds. 100 millitorr of reagent are admitted into the sample chamber for an analysis. Each aliquot of reagent is used only one time. After reaction, the excess BrFx compounds are frozen into the waste trap (rear, stainless steel bottle). For a schematic of the waste trap, click here .
