DeltaPlus XL & elemental analyzer with on-line laser fluorination line (to left), pyrolysis unit, gas bench and UV laser. H2, N2, CO, CO2, and SO2 are routinely run. Please click on the button at right to see our reference gas inlet system

The DeltaPlus XL has extended ion optics that allows for simultaneous collection of ions with large mass differences. This allows for hydrogen to be analyzed using the full flight tube and pathway through the magnet. In addition to the large separation of the peaks, there is an electrostatic filter which supresses the tail of 4He at mass 3, so that D/H ratios can be measured directly in a helium stream. Extremely small samples can be analyzed using this system. At present, we are able to analyze 0.1 microliters of water with the TC-EA system in continuous flow mode. These measurements are being made with a very crude open split. Sample sensitivity can be reduced as we modify the system to incorporate a more sensitive open split.

Shown at right is a mass scan of hydrogen in a helium stream. The contribution from 3He is suppressed, eliminating the helium contribution at mass three. See Finnigan's web site for more information. Go to Finnigan
