This is the dear old Delta E mass spectrometer. It was bought by former faculty member Crayton Yapp in the early 1980's. It isn't as fancy as the newer ones (see Delta Plus XL), but it is a super machine. A very high precision stable isotope mass spectrometer, both hydrogen and CO2 gas are routinely analyzed. Bellows and valves can be operated by either the computer or operator (let's see a new mass spectrometer have that feature!). Safe to say, the features that this old machine has do not exist on a new machine. Due to the simplicity of the source and flight tube, the mass spectrometer pumps down into the 10-9 range. This mass spectrometer is used for analysis of gases generated using off-line techniques. Hydrogen from waters and CO2 from carbonates.
