HORTON NEWSOM
Ph.D., University of Arizona, 1982. (Research Professor, Institute of Meteoritics) (505) 277-0375; newsom@unm.edu
Research and Academic Interests:
My research involves understanding the geochemistry of the origin and evolution of the
terrestrial planets, moons and asteroids. This work includes evaluating theories for the
origin of the Earth and Moon using isotopic and geochemical constraints. Another area of
my research is the geological effects of impact cratering on the Earth and Mars, including
hydrothermal alteration of impact deposits and atmospheric effects during deposition of
ejecta. I am also involved in educational outreach activities for K-12 students, and
teacher training in planetary science.
