Thoughts from UNM Faculty: 'Old Rocks' "I can't believe that I voluntarily put myself through so much pain...and then do it again the next year. It is terribly unpleasant, but I love it." Zach "A very sociable race-- Old age and treachery has the edge over youth and skill; there seems to be an inverse correlation between age and time on Mt. Taylor. Next year we need 2 faculty teams, 2 grad. teams, a faculty spice team, and 3 teams of geokids!" Karl "From training to the post-Mt. Taylor party a fantastic experience. A great way to enjoy our beautiful geologic setting and each other. Geology Rules!" Laurie "It's a great race! Good people, good spirit, and wonderful volcanic landscape... what more would you ask for? We'll be back in '02! Tobias |

Thoughts from UNM Graduate Students: 'Rock
Hard' "The first burst of adrenaline kicked in when the 60-year old woman on the mountain bike started to pass me..." Mark ""Must beat Karl....must beat Karl..." Toti "Volunteers make the race! Thank God they put Mt. Taylor next to a town with the best New Mexican food in the state (El Cafecito). Do you know they have the best rellenos, too?" Peter "I really thought that to be there, participating in the race, encouraging and being encouraged by others, evoked a special sense of community. In the race, each person is striving, is alive in a full way. In preparation for next year, I am busily recruiting professional road bikers to apply for graduate study in our dept." Annie |

Thoughts from UNM GeoKids & Friends:
'Pirates' "I be jammin', jammin', jammin'..." Brendon "I can't believe that the 60-year old lady on the mountain bike passed me!" Armando "This is the first time I have realized the extent to which you can push yourself and still be hungering for more. I have also never thought I could be so thirsty. Knowing that there was water at the top really was my motivation." Leif |
