Earth and Planetary Sciences 490, Geologic Presentations

To All EPS 490 (Spring, 2002) Students: What can you do (early) to prepare for a very painless completion for this course…….

  1. Pick up the handouts in the manila folders outside of my office (Room 203).
  2. Check the EPS 490 file (you're reading it) on the EPS Department web site; I have reconstituted numerous articles dealing with scientific presentations for the course file which are linked below.
  3. Decide on topics for two (2) presentations for the course.

The first presentation will be in late March to early April; the second and more formal presentation will be in late April and early May, perhaps during finals week. The second presentation is intended to be a "formal" 15 to 20 minute long presentation comparable to one given at a professional scientific meeting. Ideally, it should center about a topic of considerable interest to you. Many 490 students use their senior thesis research as the subject of this presentation. Importantly, the presentation should be data/observation intensive (or heavy) in that you are trying to educate or inform your audience about something new that you have/are presently working on. After all, that is the essence of science communication. The first presentation, which is less formal and could be considered something of a "warm-up" could serve as an "introduction" to the second, more formal presentation. For example, suppose you are working on the volcanic gas chemistry of a volcano in Central America as a senior thesis. The first presentation could be on the tectonic setting of Central America in the context of modern volcanism. The second presentation would be on the specific results of your study.

If you have any questions about any of this, you can reach me via email, or stop by my office. Thanks…
