Thermal characteristics of volcaniclastic deposits are central to interpreting their origin. Paleomagnetic methods can be employed to estimate the emplacement temperatures of such deposits. We have used these methods to (1) interpret cooling histories and determine thermal profiles of ignimbrites and (2) to characterize volcanic breccias and, along with other properties, determine the role of pyroclastic and autoclastic processes in their formation.
