Mineralogy, chemistry and petrology of ultrafine-grained (sub)micrometer particles in the Earth's atmosphere, in particular from the stratosphere. The major effort involves interplanetary dusts, and their laboratory-produced analogs. Emphasis is on the implications for the cosmochemical processes during solar system formation and the earliest mineralogical activity in protoplanets, such as comets and primitive asteroids in the solar system. These analytical and transmission electron microscope studies also extend to volcanic ash in order to document stratospheric residence times and particulate contamination, and to industrial fly-ash and their potential hazardous properties.
A comprehensive bibliography of stratospheric dust is available (in Adobe Acrobat format or in MS-Word 97 format.)
